Cytoplasmic Transfer (Mitochandrial Transfer)

Mitochondrial transfer treatment has helped many women worldwide pursue their dream of motherhood and having a child bearing their genes. This method transfers the mitochondria to the woman's egg in the lab. Transfering the mitochondria will improve the egg's quality and have a higher chance of fertilization and pregnancy. The mitochondria are responsible for the cell's energy production, cell division, and growth. Studies have shown a good response of eggs using the mitochondrial transfer method. The success rate can reach up to 60 percent. Mitochondrial Transfer is an excellent option for women who have diminished ovarian reserve or have had several failed IVF trials, and the women's eggs have been unable to fertilize. It has been proven that it does increase the quality of the egg and the fertilization rate.

The process of starting the treatment includes a list of steps. 

​

First step: Evaluation 

In this step, the doctor must look up the patient's medical history. If the patient has had previous IVF treatments, we would appreciate it if the patient could get a copy of the records to help the doctor evaluate the situation. Both partners will need to undergo some medical tests.

​

Second step: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) & Blood Assessment

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an X-ray procedure that views the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes. It often is used to see if the fallopian tubes are partly or wholly blocked. It also can show if the inside of the uterus is an average size and shape. The doctor will request an ultrasound scan for the patient, but we would prefer if the patient could do a Hysterosalpingography, especially if the patient had previous failed cycles.

The Female and male partners will be requested to make specific medical tests to assess their fertility. According to the blood assessments and scans from the patients, the doctor may ask for further investigation or prescribe some medications before starting the treatment.

Third Step: Medical Protocol 

The patient will receive a personalized medical protocol. We will prescribe the patient stimulation medications to use on day 2 or 3 of her period. The stimulation medications are hormonal injections to allow the follicles in the ovaries to grow. The patient will use the injections for an estimated period of 10 days. Through the ten days of stimulation medications, the patient might need an ultrasound scan to assess the follicle's development. 

 

According to each patient evaluation, the doctor will prescribe the medical protocol & medicines.

Fourth Step: Egg Retrieval & Fertilization

Once the follicles reach the needed size, the patient will take a trigger injection. The patient will be given a trigger injection 36 hours before egg retrieval. 

 

Egg Retrieval Day

We will need the patient to come to the clinic fasting. The patient shall not eat or drink anything 6 hours before egg retrieval because anesthesia will be administered. The sperm sample will be taken on egg retrieval day to start the fertilization. (We recommend 3-5 days of abstinence before giving the sperm sample)

 

Mitochondrial Transfer Procedure

The mitochondrial transfer will be done to the eggs before the fertilization with the sperm. This will allow the egg to be better in quality and increase the fertilization rate and quality of the embryos.

 

Fertilization

The fertilization of egg and sperm will be carried out by the embryologists using the latest techniques to help increase the fertilization rate. These techniques are Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) Method & Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI). 

Patients are updated regularly about their embryo fertilization.

Fifth Step: Embryo Transfer

On the day of embryo transfer, the patient shall come to the clinic with a full bladder. The full bladder will allow the doctor to see the endometrium lining clearly with the ultrasound guidance. The embryo transfer procedure is painless, and the patient will be awake. 

After the embryo transfer, the patient coordinator will give you a kit stating everything you are not allowed to do and things to help you. You will also get a paper with all the medications you need and the period of usage.

Twelve days after embryo transfer, an HCG blood test can be done to test for pregnancy.

The needed amount to stay in Cyprus for IVF Treatment:

 

The first option; is 20 days: The patient can come for the entire treatment process and stay in Cyprus. The patient must come to Cyprus on the first or second day of the menstruation cycle. The patient will have all the medications and ultrasound scan monitors at the clinic. 

​

The second option; is 10 days: The patient will be able to start the treatment in their home country. And come to Cyprus on day 10 of the menstruation cycle. The patient will need to be in Cyprus before administering the trigger injection. The patient will have a few ultrasound scan monitors in their home country, and we will help the patient.
